5 Favourite Places to Visit In Hobart

We often visit Hobart, as it is where my husband went to school and university and he still has family in the area. Here are some of our favourite places to visit as a family.

1. MONA

It is not surprising that Mona – the Museum of Old and New – has quickly become the must-visit destination for anyone visiting Hobart (or Tasmania). It had been a while since we last visited and it didn’t disappoint. The architecture is inspiring, the exhibits interesting, and there is plenty to keep children engaged, and a large lawn area where there are a range of food options. Highly recommend catching the ferry to and from the site.

2. WILLIE SMITH’S

We often go to Willie Smith’s while visiting Hobart because it’s a beautiful drive and there is a good lunch option at the end. Best visited during apple season, which is in the autumn months.

3. PIGEON WHOLE BAKERS

Another favourite place to visit. If you want good coffee, bread or food, make a detour Pigeon Whole Bakers. There are now a couple of sites around town.

4. SALAMANCA MARKETS

The Salamanca Market is a Saturday outdoor market that has been on the must-visit list for as long as I can remember. Time has not diminished what’s on offer. There is plenty of food, produce, artisanal goods, and more. Our children loved checking out all of the stalls. Allow a couple of hours.

5. MOUNT WELLINGTON / KUNANYI

Every time we visit Hobart the children want to visit Kunanyi (which is also known as Mount Wellington). It is the highest peak in Hobart and can be seen from many parts of the city. It’s often cold and windy at the top, and sometimes there is snow (which is a huge treat for our children who live in a sub-tropical region). The peak offers incredible views and some great walks too.
