Home Tour: Timeless Simplicity in Brooklyn Heights
Come take a look inside one of my favourite homes from my first — and bestselling — book This is Home: The Art of Simple Living.
It belongs to Paul Goss and Sophie Yanacopoulos, the couple behind the beloved Brooklyn homewares store HomeStories. Their townhouse in Brooklyn Heights is a quiet reminder of what it means to live with intention — and why simplicity and quality will always endure.
A Storied Home
When the couple moved from Europe to New York with their children, they were drawn to the charm of an unrenovated home — one with character, patina and a story already written into its walls. “We fell in love with the charm and the soul of the place,” Sophie says. “It’s important to have an environment that suits your spirit.”

Beauty in the Everyday
Rather than renovate, they respected what already existed. The result is a layered and lived-in space filled with natural materials, thoughtful details and meaningful objects collected over time. “There are no minor or major objects,” Sophie reflects. “You can create beauty with anything.”

A Quiet, Considered Aesthetic
From timeless timber and simple linen to sculptural chairs and poetic vignettes, every surface and corner offers a sense of calm. But what’s most beautiful is how the home reflects their way of life — slower, more connected, and grounded in what truly matters.

Reimaging Family Living
Over the years, their living room — once a forgotten space — became the centre of family life. “It has become a place for gathering, talking, relaxing,” Paul shares. A soft shift, but one that reveals the quiet power of a home designed for real living.
