If you’re looking for a departure from subway tiles and all-white bathrooms, it might be time to consider microcement. It is a material that provides a smooth, joint-free finish (ideal for small bathrooms), that enhances the elegance and cleanliness of your bathroom. Its durability and waterproof properties make it an excellent choice for high-moisture environments.

However, it is essential to understand its unique characteristics to ensure it aligns with your design vision and practical needs. Here are some factors to help you determine if microcement is the ideal solution for your bathroom renovation.

What is Microcement?

Microcement is a highly durable, polymer-modified coating that can be applied to various surfaces, including walls, floors, and furniture. Its seamless finish and smooth appearance make it a favourite among designers aiming for a minimalist, industrial, or contemporary look. It is often found in pared-back interiors in Ibiza, Brazil and Bali. Unlike traditional cement, microcement is incredibly thin — usually just 2-3 millimeters — yet remarkably strong, providing a robust surface that withstands the test of time.

5 Reasons To Choose Microcement for Your Bathroom Renovation

1. Seamless Style

One of the standout features of microcement is its ability to create a seamless, joint-free surface. This not only enhances the aesthetic appeal but also makes cleaning much easier. You can finally say goodbye to grout lines and hello to smooth, uninterrupted spaces. It also makes it ideal for small spaces; creating a more expansive look versus busy tile patterns, which can make rooms appear smaller.

2. Timeless Appeal

Microcement offers a wide range of neutral colours and finishes, from matte to glossy, allowing you to create a bathroom design that is both timeless and elevated. We used Mercadier in the colour “Noisette” from Mineral Fox. Whether you’re after a serene, spa-like retreat or a subtle space that embodies timeless elegance, microcement is a material that can help you bring your vision to life.

3. Waterproof and Resilient

Bathrooms are high-moisture environments, and microcement’s waterproof properties make it an ideal choice. It forms a durable, water-resistant layer that can handle splashes, spills, and humidity without compromising its integrity or appearance. A waterproofing layer will need to be added to your spaces first.

4. Versatility in Application

The flexibility of microcement means it can be applied to various surfaces, including existing tiles, marine ply, hebel, laminate, drywall, FC sheeting, concrete and more. This versatility allows for creative freedom in design, whether you’re updating your shower walls, vanity tops, countertops or even creating a striking feature wall. One of the main reasons we chose microcement in the bathroom design at Imprint House was because it could go straight over existing tiles.

5. Eco-Friendly Option

If sustainability is a priority for you, microcement ticks the box. It’s an eco-friendly material with a lower environmental impact compared with traditional renovation methods, thanks to its thin application and long-lasting durability. Its durable nature also means fewer replacements over time, contributing to long-term sustainability. Additionally, microcement often incorporates recycled materials and emits fewer volatile organic compounds (VOCs) during installation, promoting healthier indoor air quality.

6 Reasons You Might NOT Want To Choose Microcement

1. Skill and Expertise

Application requires skilled professionals due to its precise mixing and application techniques, which can increase installation costs. If there are a limited number of contractors who have experience in this technique, the wait time until they are available can increase costs too.

2. Cost

Initial costs can be higher compared with traditional materials like tiles, especially when factoring in skilled labour and preparation requirements.

3. Curing Time

Requires sufficient curing time after application, which may delay the completion of the project compared to faster-setting materials.

4. Potential Staining

While sealed microcement is resistant to stains, improper maintenance or exposure to harsh chemicals can cause discolouration over time.

5. Surface Preparation

Proper surface preparation is crucial to prevent bonding issues and ensure the longevity of the microcement application, adding to the complexity of the installation process.

6. Limited Colour Choices

While microcement offers a range of colours and finishes, the selection may be more limited compared with other materials like tiles or natural stone. You might find this challenging if you are trying to match an existing paint colour in the space too.

Is Microcement The Best Choice For Your Bathroom?

If you’re inspired to transform your bathroom with microcement there is plenty to consider. If you want to create an impact or have a small space (and make other savings such as keeping the existing plumbing work), it could be both a beautiful and practical choice. Ultimately, it comes down to the vision you have for your project, your available budget and how you want to prioritise your costs. Consulting with a qualified professional can provide further insight into whether microcement aligns with your design concept and the practical needs of your home.
