Transform Canvas Drop Cloths Into Curtains

An Easy & Affordable Alternative to Curtains

Adding window treatments is a great way to elevate a space by adding movement, texture and depth. However, curtains and window treatments can get very expensive.

During lockdown last year, I decided to take on the project of adding curtains to my bedroom. Instead of buying new, I had the idea to try creating curtains out of painter’s canvas drop sheets (drop cloths). I love how they turned out, as they have a natural look and feel and a beautiful weave. I thought I’d share the step-by-step guide, since these are so easy and affordable to create on your own at home.

How to Create Curtains from Canvas Drop Cloths

Step 1 – Materials

Source a canvas drop sheet from your local hardware store or online. Here’s a link to my favourite from Bunnings here in Australia (not sponsored). Make sure you get one that is big enough and long enough to act as a curtain so always measure first.

Step 2 – Drape

Once you have your drop sheet, figure out the ideal length your curtains will drop - I like mine to drape on the floor a little but this is a personal preference.

Step 3 – Measure

Measure your sheet and fold the top over as many times as you need to so it is the correct length.

Step 4 – Sew

Use a needle and thread to sew a simple dolphin stitch to hold it in place.

Step 5 – Thread

Your curtain is ready to put up - simply thread the pocket through your curtain rail. The great thing about this option is you don’t need to buy curtain hooks, clips or hoops to put up your curtains, so you’re saving time and money, too!

I used the same method to create a neutral backdrop for the STYLE book launch.
