The Best Home Project I Completed in 2022

Major renovations can be exciting, but sometimes it’s the smallest changes at home that have the biggest impact on daily living. Looking back on 2022, one of my favourite home projects was our new pantry shelving.

Before adding these new shelves, we were struggling to manage overflow from our tiny pantry cupboard.

I loved the idea of adding open shelves, but I didn’t want the space to feel overwhelming. With that in mind, we designed a shelving system that would be equally beautiful and practical.

Of course, I could quite happily just display beautiful objects on these shelves (as shown below), but that wouldn’t help me solve the storage problem.

To have the best of both worlds – pretty and practical – we added shelves just deep enough to hold cookbooks as well as dried pantry goods in glass jars, which look beautiful when displayed en-masse.

This system also works well for our family – we all enjoy adding lots of things to our breakfast each morning, and now the children can easily go and grab what they like.

Another benefit of these shelves is that the overflow space we were using before now functions as a utility room for brooms and other useful items that were previously stored outside. The flow works much better for all of us, and it feels like everything is in its right place.

As you think about potential edits to your home in the new year, consider how you live within the space, and what kinds of changes would make your life easier every day.
