STYLE SERIES: Casual Elegance
I thought it might be insightful and helpful to break down the elements of different interiors — why certain spaces feel balanced, inviting, and effortlessly stylish. From composition and colour to texture and negative space, you’ll see how small details create a big impact.
First up, I’m sharing a space that is close to my heart — a bathroom from my friend Courtney Adamo’s mid-century modern-inspired beach house. Not only did I have the pleasure of styling this space, but I’ve also been lucky enough to stay here several times, experiencing firsthand the sense of ease and tranquility it creates.
Bathrooms can often feel cold or overly functional, but this one is a perfect example of how thoughtful design and styling choices can create warmth and a sense of retreat. The balance of natural materials, soft lighting, and refined simplicity makes this space feel both grounded and elevated.
So, what makes it work? Let’s take a closer look.

Tone-on-Tone Harmony
This space is a masterclass in restraint — layering soft neutrals to create warmth and depth. The walls, vanity, and lighting all sit within a cohesive, muted palette, allowing the textures to take centre stage rather than relying on bold contrast. This creates a sense of quiet elegance.
Material Contrast That Feels Natural
The interplay between the solid stone vanity, warm timber, and hand-finished plaster walls brings a tactile richness to the space. The key here is balance — each material complements the next rather than competing for attention. The veining in the stone subtly echoes the organic grain of the timber, reinforcing a natural, grounded feel.
Considered Lighting That Enhances Mood
Lighting should never be an afterthought. Here, the softly curved wall sconces provide a gentle glow that enhances the organic warmth of the space. Their sculptural quality also adds a subtle focal point without overwhelming the overall design. This is a great example of how functional elements can also contribute to a space’s aesthetic rhythm.
Balanced Styling That Feels Effortless
Great styling doesn’t just fill a space — it enhances it. The simple terracotta vase with fresh foliage brings life and movement, introducing an organic element that softens the harder surfaces. The styling is deliberately restrained — no unnecessary clutter, just a few well-chosen pieces that create a sense of ease and authenticity.
Understated Elegance Through Thoughtful Design
The floating vanity is a quiet but powerful design decision. By keeping the base open, the space feels lighter and more expansive. The neatly folded linens and woven basket add both practicality and texture — this is where styling meets function in the most seamless way.
